Creating racial or ethnic characters who have undesirable attributes, ranging from laziness and unwillingness to work to a lack of education or intelligence and lower class attitudes and behavior. Italian American media-watch groups such as the National Italian American Foundation have argued that shows such as The Sopranos (a fictionalized TV entertainment show now in syndication) reinforce negative stereotypes by portraying Italian Americans as criminals or bigots. Similarly, members of the white working class have been stereotyped as “trailer park trash” or as lacking the refinement of the middle and upper classes. Overall, however, far more stereotyping has occurred regarding Latinos/Latinas and African Americans.

We often hear people being criticized for driving “gasguzzling” vehicles or eating at fast-food restaurants that dispense millions of sacks, wrappers, cups, and other disposable products, some of which eventually litter the nation’s roadways and dump sites. Do you think that our individual choices—such as the vehicle we own or where we eat our food—really affect the quality of our environment? Or are environmental problems beyond our control because they are caused by natural causes or decisions of large corporations and governmental agencies over which we have no control?
Women overwhelmed by their work or seemingly having few job responsibilities even when they are employed full time. The imbalance between the portrayal of female characters as either having so much work to do that they cannot complete it all or the depiction of them as having an important occupation but spending little time actually doing the work tends to convey the message that women are less than adequate in many careers and occupations. Examples include Grey’s Anatomy where female surgical interns are more often shown in romantic liaisons than in hospital work, and attorney and police shows where female characters primarily focus on interpersonal relationships, especially with men, rather than getting their job done.
